Boston Neck

Boston was originally an isthmus connected to the rest of the colony by a narrow strip of land called Boston Neck.
This strip was about a block wide and several blocks long.
It was filled in as part of the succession of fills that created what we know today as Boston.

Since the Boston Neck was the only land access to Boston shutting off the neck shut off all the land exits from Boston.
Dawes would have been stuck if he had not gotten across the neck before the soldiers shut it off.

Roxbury was just a little to the west of Boston Neck so all Boston land trade passed through Roxbury
which explains its importance during the colonial and revolutionary periods.
Land Wave, a public art project is now being built across part of the land that was Boson Neck.
